This 9-day tour will allow you to experience the full palette of Chinese culture & tradition, taking you from the capital city of Beijing; to the famed Silk Road city of Xi’an, home of the Terracotta Army; to the futuristic, steel and glass metropolis of Shanghai.

The adventure of a lifetime

Your trip starts in Beijing, where you will tour the sights and highlights of this capital city. History awaits at every turn, as visit the grand remnants of China’s Imperial past- taking in the Forbidden City, the Summer Palace and Tiananmen Square. By day we will explore the secretive Hutong alleyways, seeking out the hidden charms; at night we will enjoy the best of local cuisine and entertainment, taking in a kung fu show and sampling the local delicacy of Peking duck. You will also get the chance to pick up a bargain at the Silk and Pearl Markets.

Next, we depart for Xi’an. The roots of Chinese culture can be traced back to this former capital city. Xi’an was home to 73 emperors, spanning 4 dynasties, and this is reflected in the huge number of historical sites & museums. Xi’an is famed for as the home of the Terracotta Warriors– a collection of terracotta sculptures of the armies of China’s first emperor, Qin Shi Huang. As the eastern terminus of the Slk Road, Xi’an is also home to a pulsating mix of cultures from across the orient.

Finally, we end the tour in Shanghai. Here East meets West in a head-on explosion of architecture, food and culture. Shanghai is China’s largest city with a population of over 23 million. Here you can step into the past and visit the 16th Century Yuyuan Garden, the Jade Buddha Temple and The Bund waterfront. Experience modern-day Shanghai with a visit to the Shanghai World Financial Centre and the glass-floored observation deck 1555ft above the skyline.

Day 1
Our guide will meet you at the airport and transfer you to your hotel in Beijing City. Depending on arrival time, we will take a short walking tour before dinner.
Day 2
Today we explore Tiananmen Square- the largest public square in the world and a culturally significant public space in Beijing and beyond. From here, we will pass through the Forbidden City, and walled palace which for nearly 500 years was the home of China’s emperors. In the afternoon, we leave the hustle and bustle, and head for Beijing’s many hutongs for a tour of these secretive and historic alleyways. In the evening, we will visit one of Beijing’s most famous Kung Fu acrobatic shows.

Day 3
This morning we will leave the city to visit China’s most famous historic remnant- the Great Wall. You will have the opportunity to hike along a section of the Mutianyu Wall, ending with a ride on the toboggan or cable car. Afterwards, we savour the opulence of Beiing’s Summer Palace- a beautifully preserved resort used by emperors of bygone ages. Later, you can dive into the hectic and fascinating world of Beijing’s markets, as we try our hands at picking up a bargain the Silk or Pearl Markets.
In the evening you can experience Beijing’s showcase Olympic Park. The famous Bird’s Nest Stadium and Swimming Cube are sights to behold, especially at night when they are illuminated. Afterwards, we will head to one of Beijing’s finest restaurants for the signature dish of this world famous city- Peking Duck.

Day 4
We will visit the Temple of Heaven this morning, and perhaps even join in with the locals as the practice Tai Chi in the park. After lunch, we transfer to airport to catch our flight to Xia’an. Here we will check into our hotel before you have an evening free to explore this fascinating city.

Day 5
Today we spend the whole morning exploring the archaeological treasure trove of the Terracotta Army, before enjoying a traditional Chinese country lunch at a nearby farmhouse. We then embark on a city tour of some of Xi’an’s standout cultural landmarks, including the vibrant Muslim district.

Day 6
A real highlight of any trip to Xi’an is exploring the city walls by bike. We will ride along these ancient fortifications, viewing the city from above and learning about the significance of Xi’an as the starting point of the famed Silk Road trading route. Afterwards, we will visit Xi’an’s second most famous landmark- the Big Wild Goose Pagoda, before enjoying a show of traditional Chinese dance and music, and a hearty meal of Chinese dumplings.

Day 7
We will catch a flight to Shanghai, then transfer to our hotel. After lunch, we visit the Yu Garden, or Garden of Happiness, in the Shanghai’s old city. The centrepiece of the lush, Chinese garden, is the 5-ton Exquisite Jade Rock. Afterwards, we come face-to-face with old Shanghai, as we explore Miaoqian Dajie- Shanghai’s Old Street. This street symbolises Shanghais growth as China’s business capital, and was home to the earliest banks, jewellers and tea houses. In the evening, we will scale the dizzy heights of the Oriental Pearl TV Tower, for a breathtaking, 360 degree panorama of the bright lights of Shanghai far below.

Day 8
After a morning visit to the Shanghai Museum, we will tour People’s Square and Nanjing Road. In the evening, we cap off this fabulous tour with a cruise on the Huangpu River. Here you can drink in the sights and sounds of Shanghai from the river which flows through the centre of Shanghai, and was the lifeblood of this city’s early shipping trade.

Day 9
After breakfast, we transfer to the airport to catch our flight home, via Beijing.
