The adventure of a lifetime

Feel the warm welcome that waits for the traveller in the Andean mountainside communities; follow in the footsteps of the Inca on the path to the ancient city of Machu Picchu. Over ten days you will brush up against Peru’s history and future in the bustling, colonial towns of Arequipa and Cuzco; and drink in the sights, sounds and flavours or Peru’s wide array of natural wonder- from mountains to lakes, jungles to vast plains.

Starting in Cuzco, you will step into history on a tour of the Sacred Valley of the Inca, culminating in a pre-dawn climb to the ancient citadel of Machu Picchu, where an Andean sunrise illuminates this once forgotten city.

From Cuzco, you will transfer to Puerto Maldonado a city which sits on the fringe of the mighty Amazon Rainforest. From here, we will take riverboats, and enter the heart of the jungle to experience live in this effervescent ecosystem.

After leaving the jungle, you head south, to Lake Titicaca- one of the highest bodies of water in the world. Here we come face to face with the rich pastoral heritage of the area. You will visit the floating islands, passing fisherman and trade ships, and the island of Taquile- home to over 2000 Taquileños. These island natives are renowned throughout Peru for their exquisitely handwoven textiles and clothing. Here, knitting is an exclusively male craft, while the women make yarn and weave.

Finally, you will depart for Colca Canyon- Peru’s third most popular tourist hotspot. In parts, this canyon is over 4km deep- twice as deep as the Grand Canyon in Arizona, USA. This Andean Valley is alive with pre-Inca communities and is one of the most beautiful natural wonders in the world.

Day 1
Arrive in Cuzco, where our guide will meet you and transfer to the hotel. You have the evening free to explore this bustling colonial town.

Day 2
Today we set off for the Sacred Valley of the Incas. This is a collection of many famous and well preserved Inca ruins and once belonged to the Emperor of Inca himself. After touring some ruins we will arrive at the town of Aguas Calientes. Here you can take a dip in the hot springs which give the town its name before dinner.

Day 3
We start early today, leaving the hotel before dawn in order to reach the famed citadel of Machu Picchu. The feeling of watching sunrise slowly illuminate this once lost city, believed to be an estate for the Inca emperor Pachacuti, is an experience never to be forgotten.

After spending a full morning exploring these mystical ruins we will transfer back to Cuzco for the evening.

Day 4
Today we leave Cuzco, and head for Puerto Maldonado. This city sits on the fringes of the Amazon Rainforest. From here we will begin our journey into the heart of the jungle, boarding a boat in town, and following the Madre de Dios river. As the signs of civilisation recede our guide will show you tropical trees, medicinal plants and the abundance of natural wonders. Arriving at our lodge, you will be overwhelmed by the sounds of the jungle- from the calls of toucans and macaws; to the noise of the wind through the lush canopy as the sun sets. After dark, we will return to the river for a caiman spotting boat trip.

Day 5
At dawn we will leave the lodge to visit the macaw collpa. This is one of the greatest shows in nature- where a multitude of different bird species gather to feed themselves with mineral salt at the clay licks. We then take an excursion to the Monkey Island. Here you can interact with a variety of sloths, capuchins and squirrel monkeys in their natural territory. We then hike to reach Lake Sandoval- a natural habitat for piranhas, birds and monkeys.

Day 6
Following the natural cycle of life in the jungle, we will rise at sunrise once more, and walk to a nearby parrot clay lick. Sitting next to a stream protected by the Tambopata Candamo National Reserve, this site plays host to the multicoloured spectacle of dozens of parrots feeding on the rich mineral salts of the lick, and is a photographers dream.

We then transfer back Puerto Maldonado, visiting a local market, before catching our flight south to Puno.

Day 7
After breakfast, we leave our hotel and sail out into the clear blue waters of Lake Titicaca to visit the Uros floating islands. These man-made islands are formed from dried totora reeds fashioned into reed boats, which are joined to form the islands. This is a fascinating insight into the pre-Inca lifestyle of this proud people.
We then visit Taquile Island, home to a small population of 2000 Taquileños. These islanders are famed throughout Peru for their high-quality textiles and knitwear. We will stop for lunch here before returning to Puno.

Day 8
Early morning, we will set off by road to Colca. On the way we will stop for lunch at the Sillustani Ruins, before arriving into Colca.

Day 9
Colca Canyon is a natural phenomenon- over 4km deep, and home to rich diversity of natural and cultural highlights. We will take in the best views of the canyon from Cruz del Condor. This impressive vantage will give you the opportunity to spot an Andea Condor- an impressively sized relative of the vulture, with a wingspan of up to 3 metres! From here we can gaze up at the sky, and the canyon floor 4000 feet below. In the evening we transfer to Arequipa.

Day 10
Today we transfer to the airport to catch our flight to Lima, and then home. Bidding farewell to Peru and taking home memories and stories which will last a lifetime.
